His mother died on 18th July 1908 in the district of Cookstown. She was 53 years old.
His father remarried later that year. Denis Mills and Mary McNally were married on 24th September 1908 in the district of Cookstown. They were both in their sixties.
The 1911 census does not list William as living with the family at house 112 in Pomeroy town.
William was living and working in Scotland at the outbreak of the First World War.
William Mills enlisted in Ayr, Scotland with the Royal Irish Fusiliers.

From the Belfast Newsletter dated 30th June 1915:
Mr Denis Mills, Pomeroy, County Tyrone, received official intimation yesterday that his son, Private William Mills, 2nd Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, had been killed in action. He served throughout the South African campaign and afterwards re-enlisted.

Mr Denis Mills, Pomeroy, received official intimation on Monday that his son, Private William Mills, 2nd Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, had been killed in action. He served throughout the South African campaign.
Private William Mills is buried in Houplines Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
