Frederick Donnelly was the son of John and Mary Jane Donnelly. He was born in Stewartstown on 27th December 1893. He was one of nine children, all born in Stewartstown. By 1901, the family had moved to Belfast. His father was a general labourer. Rifleman Fred Donnelly was serving with the 10th Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles when he was killed in action on the first day of the Somme Offensive on Saturday 1st July 1916.

The 1911 census does not list Fred as living with his father at house 39 in Donegall Avenue, Belfast.
