Summary
William James Turkington was the eldest son of William and Hannah Turkington. He was born on 15th November 1891 in Killygarvan, near Donaghy, just outside Cookstown. He was the fifth of seven children, all born in the Cookstown area. Sometime between April 1896 and the census of 1901, the family moved to Belfast. His father was a railway porter. By 1911, William was employed as a railway clerk. William served with the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons. Private Turkington later transferred to the Royal Irish Fusiliers. He was killed in action at the Battle of Cambrai on Friday 23rd November 1917, a week after his 26th birthday.
The Cambrai Memorial stands on a terrace in Louverval Military Cemetery, which is situated on the north side of the N30, south of Louverval village. Louverval is 13 kilometres north-east of Bapaume and 16 kilometres south-west of Cambrai.
