John White was born in the Shankhill district of Belfast and went to live in Lower Coagh just before the start of the First World War. He went back to Belfast to enlist with 14th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles. John was killed in action on 7th December 1917 after the Battle of Cambrai.
The Cambrai Memorial stands on a terrace in Louverval Military Cemetery, which is situated on the north side of the N30, south of Louverval village. Louverval is 13 kilometres north-east of Bapaume and 16 kilometres south-west of Cambrai.
