David Glendinning was the son of David and Mary Glendinning. David was born in Randalstown about 1894. The family lived in the Loop / Ballyronan area. His father was a labourer. David enlisted with the 11th Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles in Lisburn. David Glendinning married Ellen Smyth in Antrim on 19th March 1915. Ellen and his daughter lived in The Cottage, Ballyronan, Magherafelt. May Glendinning was born in Ballyronan on 4th January 1916. Corporal David Glendinning was serving with the 11th Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles when he was killed in action at the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916. He was 22 years old.
The Thiepval Memorial will be found on the D73, next to the village of Thiepval, off the main Bapaume to Albert road (D929). Each year a major ceremony is held at the memorial on 1 July.
