Samuel Donnelly was a son of Joseph and Sarah Jane Donnelly of Stewartstown. They were married about 1885. Samuel was born about 1892 in County Tyrone. By the time of the 1911 census the family’s address had changed to Linnyglass, Ballyclog. Joseph was now a farmer. Samuel was now 19 and working as an Agricultural Labourer. Private Samuel Donnelly was killed in action at the Somme on the 1st July 1916. Sam was struck with a bullet just before the German lines and he died immediately.
The Thiepval Memorial will be found on the D73, next to the village of Thiepval, off the main Bapaume to Albert road (D929). Each year a major ceremony is held at the memorial on 1 July.
