John McKenna was born in Kildress, Cookstown. He was working in Govan, Scotland when he enlisted in the army at the outbreak of war. On 16th November 1915 the 2nd Battalion Royal Inniskilings were posted to 14th Infantry Brigade, 5th Division, and held the position at Suzanne, on the Somme. John McKenna was killed in action here on 23rd November 1915.

The Thiepval Memorial will be found on the D73, next to the village of Thiepval, off the main Bapaume to Albert road (D929). Each year a major ceremony is held at the memorial on 1 July.
