Hugh McKeown was born in Cookstown and enlisted with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers there. Hugh was killed in action as part of a night patrol lead by Lieutenant Cecil W. Glenn when the 1st Battalion attacked enemy positions on 28th January 1917, south Le Transloy. Even though the mission was a success, the battalion lost eighteen men.

The Thiepval Memorial will be found on the D73, next to the village of Thiepval, off the main Bapaume to Albert road (D929). Each year a major ceremony is held at the memorial on 1 July.
